People With True Mental & Emotional Empathy Usually Say 9 Phrases In Casual Conversation
Vika Glitter | PexelsEmpathy can be built, but in some people, it's also somewhat innate. Whether it's being sensitive to others' emotions or having the gift of intuition, people with true mental and emotional empathy practice these skills in every interaction.
They may have these abilities by nature, and most of the time you can sense their presence first. But there are also many phrases they say that give them away.
Phrases people with true mental and emotional empathy say often
1. 'I just need some space to recharge'

People with true empathy can rarely turn off the sensitivity they experience around others and in social settings. They're naturally absorbing energy from other people and taking on their feelings as their own. It drains their energy and emotional health.
At some point, they need to take a break. Whether that's setting a boundary or spending time alone, true empaths usually say something like "I need some space to recharge" when they don't have the capacity to show up as their best self.
2. 'I understand why you feel that way'
Empathetic people are great at supporting others because they can truly put themselves in their shoes. Even when they haven't been through the same experience, they can appreciate someone else's emotions and create space for them.
That's why empathetic accuracy plays such a meaningful, important role in relationship well-being, as a 2017 study suggests. The better a partner or friend is at predicting and understanding another's emotions, the better they can show up for them.
3. 'I can just sit with you'
While most people find silence awkward, empathetic people appreciate the stillness. They can sit with someone and simply appreciate the togetherness, usually because they have a deeper sense of emotional connection.
"I can just sit with you" is how they respond to someone who's not ready to speak about their feelings or doesn't know what to say. They still support them, but figure out how to do it in a way that actually makes them feel better.
4. 'We'll get through this together'
Instead of leading with their own interests and comfort in mind, mentally and emotionally empathetic people are willing to support and work with others. They put their own needs to the side, especially if they can sense someone else needs uplifting.
That's what being truly empathetic is about. You understand and consider someone's feelings and emotions, but the most compassionate people also take action and try to do something to support those in their circle.
5. 'That makes sense'

Feeling heard is a beautiful part of healthy conversations and relationships, usually stemming from feelings of respect and kindness. When someone feels heard, they feel valued and seen. So, even in casual conversations, phrases like "that makes sense" are powerful.
They're how empathetic people validate another person's feelings, even if they aren't sure how to process it themselves. It's not about solving or fixing emotions, but simply creating space for them to exist without judgment.
6. 'How can I help?'
On top of caring about supporting and understanding others, highly empathetic people are also curious. They want to know what's going on in other people's lives, including what they need and are feeling.
This curiosity is tied to their empathy, compared to the average person who prefers to use ignorance as a selfish excuse to avoid connection. "How can I help?" might feel like an empty promise from some, but for empathetic people, it's a truly intentional, thoughtful way to support others.
7. 'Don't apologize'
The most empathetic people often make us feel safer to express emotions. Instead of trying to fix everything we're expressing or dismissing our feelings, they reassure us.
Even in conversations with insecure people prone to over-apologizing or anxious folks who over-explain, they create a space for everyone to express themselves comfortably.
8. 'You don't have to say anything'
With people they know well, empathetic people can read someone's energy and emotions without saying a word. When they know an interaction will be too much, they're not afraid to say "you don't have to say anything" and just appreciate someone's presence.
Them just being there is enough. And with the ability to predict and understand what someone's thinking, they know how to show up as a real safe space.
9. 'I need some alone time'

Despite often co-regulating with others and finding joy in connecting with them, many empathetic people are sensitive to overstimulation. Whether it's loud noises or being around negativity for too long, they often need more space to recharge.
Even if they're attuned to their internal energy and careful about where they spend it, you might notice them saying "I need some alone time" unexpectedly amid conversations when they're feeling drained.
