9 Things Women Only Start Saying When They Realize Their Relationship Can't Be Saved
Roman Samborskyi / ShutterstockEven if it seems like a relationship ended practically overnight, that's often not the case. Many women try desperately for months or even years to let their boyfriend or husband know that they have serious problems to be addressed, but he doesn't agree or can't be bothered to do his part to make things better.
Once a woman finally comes to the realization that their relationship simply cannot be saved, the kinds of things she says take a turn that is actually pretty obvious if you know what they actually mean.
Women only start saying these things after they've realized there’s no way to save their relationship

There comes a time when a woman has to acknowledge that she's fighting for something she may have once had but that no longer exists. That brings up a lot of different emotions, but eventually it leads to an empty feeling that makes them wonder why they even tried.
It's natural for people to become resigned to their fate in these situations because it’s more comfortable than feeling the full force of their pain. But if someone literally feels nothing, it’s a pretty good sign that they're getting ready to abandon the relationship for their own good.
2. ‘I can’t keep fixing everything’
Many relationships end when women realize they’ve been completely one-sided. That means she’s done all the work while her partner did next to nothing.
Not only are one-sided relationships bad for people’s mental health, but they also don’t really fit the definition of what a relationship is. It’s not fair for one person to feel like they solve all of the problems without any help, and it’s easy to see how that could cause resentment to build.
3. ‘I’m not asking for much, but you still won’t change’
Just like someone can quietly quit their job, they can also quietly quit their relationship. One of the main signs this is happening is that they’ve completely stopped trying. Although it sounds bad, there’s really no way to describe it other than giving up.
This is obviously frustrating for their partner. A woman might know it’s over because her partner won’t do the simplest things to improve their relationship. It’s even worse when they act like her small requests are unreasonable.
4. ‘Maybe love isn’t enough’
Everyone has a pretty general idea of what love feels like, and they aren’t prepared for it to change once they’ve found it. But it’s bound to change as time goes by, and that doesn’t always mean anything is wrong.
Some couples can’t handle that, though. A woman might realize that even though she and her partner love each other, or did at one point in time, that’s not enough. Their relationship can’t keep going on nostalgia alone when they’ve turned into different people.
5. ‘I need to stop choosing you over myself’

It sounds kind of terrifying to put yourself first, especially when you’re trying to make a relationship work. But prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish, even though our culture often makes it sound that way.
This is especially common in relationships, where one person can lose their identity in the partnership. Some women have to face the fact that they’ve been neglecting themselves and have nothing to show for it, so it’s time to move on.
6. ‘I’m done defending you’
Defending someone doesn’t mean their behavior is truly disrespectful. It could mean they aren’t doing much of anything. That makes it harder to recognize as a red flag because it’s not as obviously bad.
Either way, justifying the things someone does, or doesn’t do, is a form of denial meant to protect you from the painful truth. No matter how hard they try to avoid it, women will have to address this eventually and give up the defense they’ve built for their partner.
7. ‘We just keep having the same conversation over and over again’
Relationships can’t survive without healthy communication. Conversations that feel repetitive and unproductive definitely can’t be described that way. Eventually women will realize that’s not working.
If a couple feels like they’re talking in circles, that means they aren’t willing to talk about their actual problems. They’re just sticking to whatever feels the most comfortable or familiar instead, which gets them nowhere.
8. ‘No matter what I do, nothing ever changes’
People may feel stuck in any area of their lives, including their relationships, for many different reasons. Sometimes the things that make a couple feel stuck can be worked through, but sometimes they mean it’s time to move on.
When women have been making a real effort to improve their relationships and things aren’t getting better, that’s a pretty good sign they won’t get unstuck any time soon. As much as it hurts, they have to acknowledge that nothing is changing because nothing can change.

When someone has been in a relationship for a long time, it feels more comfortable to stay than to leave. Even if they aren’t very happy, it’s still what they’re used to. That makes it hard to end things and face the unknown.
But that’s not a good reason to stay together. Some relationships end without anything serious happening. Once women get over that initial fear, they’ll see that it’s not really meant to be.
