The unique love and connection isn’t the only special part about being a grandparent. Some say chasing after the little ones keeps them young. They also take pride in providing their grandchildren with unconditional love that is different from their parents’. They can even be a source of comfort when things are hard at home. They’ll never forget the bond they share and the memories they made for the rest of their lives.

Support from multiple generations can be life-changing for children. Active grandparents in their lives can help children regulate their emotions well into adulthood.

It may seem like kids get the most out of these chats, but they benefit everyone involved. They create bonds and memories that last.

Relationships with their grandchildren help improve cognitive ability. These interactions also help them socialize and build a special connection. Throughout their grandchildren’s lives, they’ll provide support that will stick with them.

2. Special holiday traditions

Family traditions give everyone involved a sense of purpose. They’re something to bond over and look forward to.

I have many special traditions with my grandparents, but one that sticks out is helping decorate the Christmas tree every year. I remember it fondly because when my cousins and I put an ornament on the tree, my very detail-oriented Nana would move them if she didn’t like the placement. I still laugh thinking about her moving everything around because her grandkids were sticking them anywhere and everywhere.

It takes effort from both sides to keep traditions alive. The moments they share during these special occasions stick with them for the rest of their lives. They made them feel important, needed, and fulfilled.

There wasn’t a milestone in my life that my grandparents missed. From my silly talent show performances in elementary school to the day I graduated with my master's degree, they were always in the crowd cheering me on. Grandparents cherish watching their grandchildren succeed.

Younger people might think this is wild because it's just laughter. We hear it every day. However, there’s more to sharing a laugh than we may understand.

Laughter releases tension and makes us feel socially safe around someone. For children, laughter plays a pivotal role in their development. It helps shape their emotional regulation and social competence.

Grandparents may not realize how important it is to laugh with their grandkids, but they will never forget the sound of their laughter. To them, it’s one of the most precious sounds because everything their grandchild does is perfect.

6. Sharing hobbies and passions

Sharing moments with grandchildren is one of the most important things a grandparent can do for their own health. A study found that those who are engaged in their grandchildren’s lives are less lonely and have stronger memories. Sharing a passion can help keep them close.

When I picture this, I think of a grandfather who teaches their grandchild how to fish, or a grandma who passes down the love of needlepoint. Now, they have someone to teach and do these activities with, giving them much-needed socialization.

Growing up, one of my grandmothers loved birds. She volunteered at a bird sanctuary. I’ve always volunteered with cats and dogs, so this was a foreign concept to me. I started going with her and developed a love for birds. I mean, they can learn to talk! I wouldn’t have given them much attention if she hadn’t introduced me, and still, to this day, we talk about birds every chance we get.

It’s special to play a role in someone’s life and watch them grow up to live up to their potential. Grandparents may not realize how much they’ve inspired their grandchildren to become the people they are today. They are integral in our development. Family wisdom can guide people through the difficult moments in their lives, helping them come out stronger than ever.

Sadly, for most grandparents, interactions with grandchildren decrease as they reach adulthood. For those who are still active in their lives, they may become emotional when they see how far they’ve come over the years.

8. Passing down family history

As the older generations sadly pass away, so do their memories. Important family stories can get lost from generation to generation. However, when grandparents take the time to share these memories with their children and grandchildren, they live on. Family stories are lived history that should always be remembered.

Family stories teach values and leave their grandchildren filled with hope. Hearing stories of relatives who survived the Great Depression or time in the military can be uplifting. Likely, they’ll want to pass them down to their own children, which keeps them alive long after the people involved passed away.
