He spent 24 years (1987-2010) as an award-winning sportswriter for newspapers in Florida and for various online publications, covering primarily major-league baseball. He got his start covering high school sports in South Florida and later covered the NFL, the NHL and many other professional sports leagues and teams. Carter earned multiple top 10 mentions in numerous Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) award categories, as well as Florida Sports Writers Association awards. His journalism career fed his love of travel and took him to every major city in North America, as well as Tokyo and London.

He was invited to conduct writing and editing seminars at various social media conferences and digital summits from 2013-2020.
