People with class seem to have a different kind of air about them. They carry themselves with dignity and self-respect.

Class is an internal trait and not measured by how much money you have or how popular you are. It comes through in the way you act and speak, and people who have it both mentally and emotionally express it in conversation, even when they're not even trying.

Mentally & emotionally classy people use these phrases when they're casually chatting:

1. 'You have a remarkable gift'

Classy people don't try to put themselves above other people. They don't really think about status. They're able to acknowledge what they're good at and what they need help with. They're also able to admit when someone is better than them at something.

That's because they don't care to be the best at whatever is going on. They just want it to be done in the best way possible, and if that's not them, that's okay. Their humility is what makes them so mentally mature and classy

2. 'I’ve been reading the news...'

My sister always said it’s very classy to stay informed about the world. She thinks it’s important to have a broader perspective on the world. From her point of view, it's what helps people engage in deep discussions and better understand life.

In a nutshell, being informed shows care. Some people get nervous about bringing up politics cause they think it can make a conversation tense. However, classy people don’t turn a conversation into an argument.

They try to discuss it in a respectful, thought-provoking way that doesn’t cause tension. If their conversation was creating tension, they probably shut it down before it went too far.

3. 'I can’t do that anymore'

Everyone picks up a bad habit at some point in their lives, even classy people. The difference is they have the mental maturity to change. They don't waste time repeating a habit that only causes them harm. If their friends bring up doing whatever that bad habit was, they'll tell them, "I can't do that anymore."

This also shows their emotional class because they're staying calm. Breaking habits can be really hard. It's incredibly tempting to go back to the soothing behavior.

Emotionally classy people acknowledge it's not their friends' fault they had that problem. They'll politely tell them it's just something that no longer works for them.

4. 'I love how you changed your...'

Classy people want to make other people feel good. They’ll give their friends compliments all the time. They’ll try to make them unique as well, so they only work for the person they’re given to.

That’s how their friends truly feel appreciated and seen. They know their classy friend isn't just blowing smoke. They really mean it. They’ll also notice the little differences their friends make. If their friend gets a new haircut, they’re going to comment on it.

Not many people would say that someone they think is selfish is a super classy person. The people who would rather support their friends than get what they want are much classier. They're showing their emotional maturity by trying to support their friends. They know they need help, and they don't want to leave them hurting.

Their understanding of their friends' emotions is also what makes them mentally classy. They've educated themselves about how people feel and how they're affected by their emotions. They know that when people are left alone while they're struggling, it'll usually only get worse.

When someone actively listens to their friends, the people talking will usually start seeing them in a more positive light as well. That's why they're perceived as classy in the first place.

6. 'Don’t say that'

Someone with class doesn’t accept extremely rude behavior. It ruins the evening's mood because someone’s feelings are hurt, and everyone else feels bad.

Gossiping and bullying are the opposite of class, and someone with a high-brow mindset isn't going to engage in or be present with someone who feels it's acceptable.

7. That makes me uncomfortable'

Classy people always hold on to their dignity. They aren’t going to put up with something that makes them feel they're not being true to themselves. Even if the whole group is doing one thing, they’ll decide if it contradicts their beliefs before saying yes. If it does, they’ll be honest and tell their friends, “That makes me uncomfortable.”

This shows they’re nonconformist. They hold themselves to a standard that isn’t going to change for other people. They’ll be the first ones to admit if something is too much for them. Their respect for themselves makes them all the more classy.

Classy people don’t always have the nicest clothes, but they are always dressed to the nines. They have their own unique style that makes them look put together every time they leave the house. While some people think clothes are materialistic, classy people know they don’t have to be.

Being well-dressed makes people perceive you differently and changes your personal level of confidence. Classy people always want to go out as the best version of themselves, and so they’ll make sure to be well-dressed. That way they're confident in themselves inside and out.

9. 'Let’s try something different'

Being financially responsible is a very mentally classy thing to do. It shows you are smart and thoughtful enough to know when to quit. Say a group of friends wants to do something their classy friend can't afford. They won't go, but they won't tell them no either.

Instead, they'll suggest, "Let's try something different." It's important to notice that they never mention money in that phrase. Knowing that your friend is struggling financially can make you feel really guilty and uncomfortable. Money has even been seen to ruin 1 in 5 friendships.

Someone who makes a new suggestion shows their emotional class by not making their friends feel this way. They're also emotionally classy enough not to let their desire to go with their friends cloud their judgment. They'll prioritize financial responsibility instead.
