According to a study by SAGE Publications, talking to strangers makes us more intelligent. And not only that: Asking thoughtful questions or reaching out for help can enhance how others perceive our intelligence. On the flip side, some habits and phrases can unintentionally cloud our intellect.

Whether it’s inflated hoity-toity language or condescending phrases that give an air of one-upmanship, a person’s speaking style and word choices can significantly affect how intelligent they seem.

People who think everyone else is stupid usually use these condescending phrases:

1. ‘No offense, but’

According to a study in the Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience journal, a person’s ability to process and regulate emotions is linked to their general intelligence. When someone uses a phrase like “no offense,” they blatantly disregard the language and social skills associated with that intelligence, encouraging others to view them as less competent.

While this subtle phrase may seem unassuming in conversation, disguised behind someone claiming to be brutally honest, it can be inherently dismissive and invalidating. Intelligent, self-aware people lead with compassion in their conversations and help people feel heard, author Louay Safi argues in his book Leading with Compassion.

2. ‘I’ll own that’

According to a study in the Clinical Psychology Review, taking responsibility for mistakes and “owning up” to shortcomings signals emotional intelligence and encourages others to see you as more confident and competent. However, the language you use when taking accountability matters, as it can sometimes undermine the wellness associated with an act of emotional intelligence like this.

When you say, “I’ll own that,” you’re typically referring to something tangible that you’ll own without any associated action. You can own a home, your car, or a new book, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll take any actions that come with that ownership.

When you say you’ll own a mistake, it can feel dismissive, especially if it's paired with language that doesn't match a genuine apology or tangible steps to make amends. Instead, use phrases like “How can we best move forward?” or “Here’s what I’ll do to make up for my mistake” to reassure the people around you and help them see you as more competent and thoughtful.

3. ‘I feel you’

According to Harvard linguist Steven Pinker, in his book The Sense of Style, people often misuse words and misunderstand phrases they rely on in their daily vocabulary, even those generally perceived as well. However, using these phrases regularly without consideration for their true intentions can sabotage social connections. When you tell someone “you feel them,” you may mean it compassionately — trying to help someone feel heard while expressing their emotions — but if you say it to the wrong person, it can come across as, well, not.

4. ‘I could care less’

Unsurprisingly, “I could care less” is a condescending phrase that insults everyone’s intelligence, since it’s one of the most misunderstood and misused phrases that many people still use incorrectly in daily life. When you say, “I could care less,” you’re not expressing complete apathy toward someone or something; you’re telling them you do care, just not as much as other things.

5. ‘It’s impossible’

Saying something is “impossible” usually reflects a person’s self-worth more than the situation's actual practicality. Using a phrase like this creates limits to what a person can achieve. You can grow if you’re willing to try something and experience things you’ve never done before. Still, if you rely on saying this to avoid discomfort, it’s not surprising that others perceive you as pretty condescending — when it comes from the wrong person, this becomes a restrictive phrase that sabotages a person's confidence and dreams.

6. ‘To be honest’

Honesty generally requires more than simply telling the truth and saying the right things, but that doesn’t mean phrases like “to be honest” can’t undermine a person’s perceived integrity. According to psychologists, saying “to be honest” can lead others to believe you’re not always honest, despite your intention. When you’re adamant about reminding people you’re being honest, you sabotage your ability to build trust, encouraging folks to steer clear of conversations and interactions with you. Plus, it's just a condescending phrase in general.

When you’re an intelligent person who finds joy in curious endeavors and stimulation in seeking new experiences, this phrase will, of course, feel like an insulting jab at everyone’s intelligence. According to a study published in the Journal of Individual Differences, there’s a link between a person’s intelligence and their curiosity. However, when a phrase like this snubs the pursuit of new experiences and challenges, it’s no surprise that people see it as condescending.
