I love hanging out with my friends, but sometimes I need some time alone. If I’ve had too much social interaction, I’ll struggle to stay energetic when I talk to people. I’ll make the conversations go as fast as possible because I would rather just be myself.

Taking a long shower on those nights can be incredibly relaxing, and I know it's not just me who feels this way. Many people do the same thing because showers are so good at helping people recharge. People who like to keep their conversations short and love taking long showers afterward to relax often have specific traits that help explain their deeper character.

People who prefer long showers & short conversations usually have 6 distinct personality traits

1. They tend to be introverted

People who need to spend some time on their own in order to recharge after social interactions are called introverts. It’s not that they don’t like people. They often love being social, but they need some dedicated alone time afterward to feel prepared to hang out with them again.

Long conversations tend to deplete them. They’d rather have a short conversation so they can get home quicker, but if they get stuck in a longer conversation, they'll often force themselves to put on a smile and stay put for as long as they can. Once they're back home, they'll often take a long hot shower because that's a space where they can be totally alone. They may even make the shower as long as possible, letting the water soothe them and allowing them to avoid having to talk to their family or roommates.

2. Self-reflection is one of their favorite pastimes

When I’m deep in thought, I have a hard time carrying on conversations. I’m too consumed with whatever idea I’m reflecting on to really pay attention to what someone else is saying. People like me who like to keep their conversations quick are in that headspace all the time. They’re naturally reflective people who enjoy being introspective more than being social. They get more value unpacking how the world works and their place in it than from long discussions with friends.

These people are also reflective enough to know what they need. When they’re feeling run down, they recognize their need to relax, which is exactly why they head straight for a long, hot shower.

3. They're frequently lonely

Most people love hot showers. For me, it calms me down in a way that nothing else can. I never really thought too deeply about it, but there’s a scientific reason they feel so nice. The hot water acts as a source of emotional support and warmth. It’s almost like a big hug.

People who don’t have a ton of friends can take showers to trick their brains into experiencing the benefits of social interaction, since showers soothe the effects of social rejection and make people feel less like an outsider.

4. Social situations make them anxious

Long conversations can be extremely stressful if you're an anxious person. There are more moments they’ll have to overanalyze as they question themselves about them later. These people prefer short conversations because they won't have to think about having said too much later, which just might put their brain on overload.

These are the same people who prefer to take a long shower rather than hang out with their friends. There isn’t much to be anxious about while someone is standing under a warm stream of water alone.

5. Efficient communication is one of their top talents

Short conversations lay all the information on the table as quickly as possible. Their conversations may still dive deep below the surface, but that doesn't mean they have to go on and on indefinitely.

People who prefer short conversations are usually good at them. They’re efficient communicators because they can tell someone exactly what they’re thinking in just a few words. They’re also effective communicators because they get direct about what they want. They’ll be honest and say that they’d rather go home and take a hot shower than hang out with friends or meet new people.

6. Creativity is second-nature for them

This may sound strange, but hot showers help people become more creative. It's something scientist Zachary Irving calls the shower effect. In the shower, our minds are able to wander. There are no outside distractions to influence our thoughts, and so people entertain themselves differently. Our brains start to get creative.

That's why most people who consistently take long showers are usually more creative than most. They probably enjoy short conversations because they'd rather be spending their time doing a craft or taking another shower to inspire them.
