People Who Are Mentally & Emotionally Stunted Say 9 Deeply Hurtful Things In Casual Conversation
PeopleImages | ShutterstockPeople who never developed mentally and emotionally can be cruel and careless with their words. They'll slip hurtful comments into everyday conversations as if they're completely normal.
These types of people struggle with empathy and self-awareness. They may say hurtful things without fully understanding the impact of their words. These remarks can leave lasting emotional scars, even if it's not intentional.
Hurtful things mentally and emotionally stunted people tend to casually say:
1. 'You're too sensitive'

This is the classic comeback of someone who doesn't want to admit their words landed poorly. Instead of thinking that maybe they could have said something differently, emotionally immature people often flip the script and make the other person's reaction the main issue. Suddenly, you're not hurt, and they're innocent.
Being considerate doesn't mean walking on eggshells. It means understanding that words are powerful. Someone who truly cares about others won't turn your feelings into a character flaw. They'll be willing to take a little responsibility.
2. 'Learn how to take a joke'
This is an escape route for people who don't want to admit they crossed a line. They hide behind humor and act like you're the problem for not laughing along. A joke is supposed to be funny for everyone involved, not just the person making it.
Intent matters, but so does impact. If someone says a comment hurt them, the goal is to care enough to understand why. Making someone feel small and then calling it a punchline doesn't magically make it funny.
3. 'That's just who I am'
Someone who says this phrase is not planning on changing, no matter what. They use their personality like a permanent excuse. They put the responsibility on everyone else to accept them exactly as they are.
The truth is, emotional growth requires being willing to look at yourself and make adjustments. It's not necessary to become a completely different person, but maybe just someone who can admit when they're wrong and try a little harder next time.
4. 'You make everything about yourself'

People with low emotional maturity have a way of turning every conversation into a blame game. They never address what someone is actually feeling. They shut the other person down and make them feel bad for wanting to be heard. Really, they just don't want to deal with emotions that aren't their own.
Nobody wants to be around someone who never considers others, but healthy relationships do require both people to share their thoughts and feelings. Turning someone's emotions into a personal attack is a sign that a person is more interested in defending themselves than connecting.
5. 'Other people have it worse'
This phrase is usually used by emotionally stuck people who think comparing struggles somehow makes problems disappear. Sure, someone else might be going through something difficult too, but that doesn't erase what a person is going through. Pain isn't a competition, and there isn't a limit on how many people are allowed to have a hard day.
Empathy isn't about ranking whose problems are bigger. It's about showing up and listening. When someone shares something that's bothering them, they aren't looking for a debate or a fight. They end up feeling more alone than they did before.
6. 'If you loved me, you'd do this for me'
Mentally and emotionally underdeveloped people use guilt to pressure someone into proving their feelings. Saying no to something that pushes your boundaries suddenly means you don't care enough.
Healthy relationships definitely don't have ultimatums or make someone feel bad for having their own needs, and love doesn't mean doing everything the other person asks. Someone who is emotionally mature knows that you can care deeply about someone and still say no or have different opinions.
7. 'You're overreacting'

People who struggle to emotionally connect with others often dismiss feelings they don't want to deal with. If it's uncomfortable for them, they are going to shut the conversation down.
The truth is, people don't get to decide how something feels to someone else. What seems small to one person might be a much deeper issue to another. Some don't realize that you don't have to agree with another person's feelings to still honor them.
8. 'I don't care what anyone thinks'
On the surface, this phrase gives off major confidence and independence. However, when someone says it to excuse being rude or dismissive, it reveals a deeper lack of emotional awareness.
People who struggle with emotional growth don't realize you can be true to yourself while still being respectful and willing to listen. They're simply avoiding the responsibility that comes with being in relationships with other people.
9. 'I'm just being honest'
Those who use this phrase think it's a free pass to say whatever they want without repercussions. People who never really grew up emotionally sometimes confuse being honest with being harsh. They treat bluntness like a character trait that they can't change.
They don't understand that there are ways to be honest while still being kind. If a person delivers unnecessary criticism under the guise of honesty, they might just be avoiding accountability for how they communicate.
