When someone has a really high IQ, their brain works differently. This affects pretty much everything they do, including how they communicate.

This is clear to see in the way average thinkers send some texts that highly intelligent people would just roll their eyes at. They can’t stand not getting right to the point, so they don’t do that when they’re texting.

High IQ people hardly ever send these kinds of texts that those with average minds usually think are totally OK:

1. Long, rambling paragraphs

Everyone has tapped on a new text notification before and been shocked to see an unnecessarily long message that fills them with both dread and confusion. What’s even more annoying is when very little of what that person said was actually relevant to the conversation.

High IQ people never send paragraph-length texts because they value direct communication. They say what they need to without going overboard and without being mean. It might feel abrupt at times, but it’s the kind of thing people appreciate when they can read a text in seconds.

2. Multiple messages in a row

Lots of people send texts in something that resembles a stream-of-consciousness style. Instead of thinking through what needs to be said and including it all in one message, they send several back-to-back.

Since intelligent folks think differently than everyone else, they don’t do that. They don’t send paragraph-length messages, but they also don’t send five in a row. Texting is casual, but they still bring their elevated way of thinking to it without trying.

3. Requests for a phone call or in person chat without any context

There are few things as concerning as getting a text that just says, “We need to talk.” It sends someone spiraling, wondering what in the world the other person is referring to.

The strong emotional reaction this message causes means it’s usually not a good idea to send it. Intelligent people can word things more delicately so they don’t cause panic. They know that something vague and stressful makes the situation even worse.

4. Misusing LOL

It seems like most people add LOL to every single text they send, even when it’s not funny at all. For average folks, this is a way to infuse their texts with a lighthearted tone of voice, not a sign that they’re actually laughing.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but high IQ people usually avoid it. They’re big fans of just saying what they mean and moving on, and they don’t feel like it’s necessary to soften their words with something they think is meaningless.

5. One-word replies

To be fair, there are plenty of situations where a one-word reply is really all that’s needed. Anything beyond that might actually come across as weird. But when someone sends a lengthy text, and all they get back is OK, it’s more than a little awkward.

People with high IQs don’t do this, but not just because they know it makes everything feel less friendly. Intelligent minds don’t really think in single-word answers. They don’t add unnecessary elaboration, but they also don’t condense their big ideas into one syllable.

6. Not stopping until someone responds

Not everyone is glued to their phones, so some people may take longer to reply to a text than others. Some folks use that as an opportunity to show an extreme level of persistence by texting over and over again until they get the response they’re waiting for.

Unless there’s a true emergency, this really just makes someone look needy. Super smart people understand that’s frustrating for the other person and doesn’t make them look good either. They choose patience, even when it’s hard, because it’s always more effective.

7. Late-night oversharing

When someone sends a really deep text really late, it can feel even more awkward than a one-word answer. The person who got the message is left wondering what they’re supposed to do with a 2:00 a.m. truth bomb.

Researchers believe people don’t think as clearly late at night, which can lead them to make some questionable choices. Even the smartest folks know their brains won’t be functioning at full capacity then, so they don’t risk picking up the phone unless they have to.

8. Correcting the other person’s grammar

No one is completely immune to typos, even if they triple-check messages before hitting send. It’s really not a big deal when the error is small and doesn’t change the meaning of the text, though.

Instead of turning into the grammar police, high IQ people let those things slide. It might annoy them, but they’re not going to put someone on the spot by calling it out. It’s no surprise that they seem way more likable as a result.
