Boomers, Gen X, Millennials & Gen Z Have Completely Different Ideas Of What Counts As A Comfortable Lifestyle
FaceStock / ShutterstockWhat a comfortable life looks like isn't necessarily the same for everyone. For boomers, it might be as simple as buying a home and having money saved up. For Gen Z, though, it could be having the freedom to just be themselves.
Each generation has its own expectations and standards of what doing well actually means, and it's clearly reflected in the type of lifestyle they strive to have.
Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers all have their own different ideas of what counts as a comfortable lifestyle.
Comfort is still largely linked to stability for the Baby Boomer generation. Owning a home and knowing their bills will always be paid is often their ultimate version of making it. There's something reassuring to them about having a life that feels settled.

They also place an emphasis on taking care of the important things before allowing themselves to have fun. A comfortable lifestyle could mean having a steady retirement fund and enough financial freedom with what's left over to enjoy dinner out or take a vacation. Security comes first, and enjoyment second.
For Gen X, comfort means not having to worry about every little thing.
Generation X doesn't need the fanciest version of things. All they really care about is having things that work for them. Stability is important, but living stress-free is the real height of comfort.

Gen Xers want to be able to live on their own terms. They don't need anyone telling them what they should be doing, because they already know exactly what they're looking for. Being able to engage in a hobby or have a quiet weekend feels like a real luxury, and that's what makes a comfortable lifestyle for them.
Millennials see living comfortably as having enough money to enjoy nonessentials.
Checking the traditional boxes of buying property, getting married, and starting a family immediately doesn't appeal as much to millennials. They just want to be able to afford things that make them feel comfortable and happy, like reliable Wi-Fi, regular takeout, a few subscriptions, and maybe even the occasional weekend trip.

Flexibility is also incredibly valuable to millennials. Being able to do things like work from home and take mental breaks without feeling guilty is a major sign of success in life. Comfort essentially means having choices without constantly worrying about money.
A comfortable life is whatever Gen Z wants it to be.
Gen Z is carving out its own definition of comfort. Their goals are far less traditional than previous generations, so naturally, their desired lifestyles will look a lot different too. Instead of measuring their happiness by homeownership or a big paycheck, they may care more about having time and just enough money to enjoy their actual life.
Appearances don't matter nearly as much to this generation. Being able to set healthy boundaries at work, spending time with friends, pursuing creative passions, and not living paycheck to paycheck are all they really need. They want lives that feel good, not ones that just look impressive.
