Lots of people are self-proclaimed old souls. They think of themselves as wise and romantic in a classical way. But there are some young people who feel old in a way that's not cute.

These young people feel old not because of their love of crochet, but because of deeper issues. The reasons are often quite sad, but fortunately, many of these effects are reversible once someone notices them in their lives.

People who feel super old even though they're actually young often experience these 6 tough things:

1. Premature burnout

Burnout is a normal part of life. We have to work in order to live, and sometimes it just gets to be too much. If we're not on top of that, we burn out.

When this happens, priorities change. When the weekend rolls around, the last thing we want to do is spend more energy by going out or talking to friends. Soon enough, we're lonely.

When young people resort to so-called old person activities instead of things that are healthy for their age, it's often so they can preserve energy, not because they love staying home and knitting.

Most people report chronic levels of stress when they are in their 40s or 50s, with a spouse and kids and a mortgage to think of. This is why, when young people feel chronically stressed, it's something to take note of and why study was so important. It discovered which is that it’s not uncommon for young people to feel older than they are.

3. Unprecedented financial struggles

Money is always a big stressor for people, but now more than ever younger people are feeling a major financial pinch. This is partly because there are fewer available full-time starter jobs for them, but it's also stress from the economy in general.

Inflation is super high, and many Americans report accrued debt. As a result, younger people are making less money, and can’t really afford to do all the fun activities that young people should be doing.

For example, most post-graduate students like to go on vacations to celebrate, but that isn’t really possible for many students nowadays. They often don't go out to dinner with friends and may even spend less time out at bars and concerts.

They opt for a chill night in rather than going on because they can’t afford it, when they wish they could be out having adventures. No wonder this economy is making them feel old!

4. Emotional and mental struggles

A group of young people online described so many of their peers with emotional challenges and mental illness feel so old. According to them, it’s mainly due to mental illness, such as depression. One of these respondents writes, “I've found that those with mental illness, but usually more specifically depression, are more emotionally mature for their age."

People with depression often spend a lot of time alone, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and young people today spent a good chunk of their adolescence at home during lockdowns in 2020 and 201. As a result, they have known themselves pretty well and have done a lot of exploring intellectually.

These folks feel more mature as they have had more time to themselves to discover themselves, which is a wonderful thing. Other young people may no have not experienced this and find that sort of isolation and lack of social motivation depressing, adn feel old in a very bad way.

5. Childhood parentification

Young people who feel they've have had to raise a young person (either themselves or a sibling) often feel like they have grown up way quicker than those who didn’t have to do this.

“Parentification is when a child is forced to take on the role of a supportive adult within their family,” psychologist Lybi Ma explains. This happens a few different forms, the obvious one being a child having to physically take care of another child, or having to emotionally support a younger child. Either one of these can be detrimental to the older sibling.

Many people who were parentified as children feel like they started adulthood at a very young age, sometimes even age 8 or 10. That means they feel a solid decade older than their peers, and not for a good or healthy reason.

People with chronic disabilities often feel older than they are due to their lack of abilities, as might someone who acquired repetitive use injuries when they were young, like they might gain in today's excessive sports culture.

For example, chronic back pain can limit somebody’s ability to engage in social activities with their friends. Other disabilities, such as chronic fatigue, ligament pain, or anxiety, can make young people feel a heavy internal state that other young people don’t understand. In fact, research shows that chronic pain in young adults has long-term impacts on their future relationships and careers.

The good news is that, while these factors exist and the past cannot be changed, the way you handle these feelings and process these experiences can. It's not your fault you experienced issues that contributed to feeling older than the hills, but now that you understand it, you can start making some changes to bring fun and lightness back into your life.
